Bringing together newly commissioned writing alongside reprints of significant essays on Imamura’s filmography, the monograph also features the first English-language translation of selected chapters from Imamura’s autobiography, Journeys of Madness: My Life in Film (映画は狂気の旅である, 2004).

The publication brings together a chronological overview of Imamura’s expansive body of work from early features that peer into the motley underbelly of postwar Japan to the founding of Imamura Productions and the documentaries he made under its umbrella, to later works that take aim at the mythologies of nationhood and the ouroboros of history. A filmmaker whose self-professed interest was the “lower part of the human body and the lower part of the social structure on which the reality of daily Japanese life obstinately supports itself,” Imamura devised a cinema preoccupied with the irrepressible impulses of desire, ambition and obstinate perseverance which shaped the larger political and social forces that garter Japanese society.

The texts gathered here offer incisive perspectives on the singular vision of Shōhei Imamura.
