The Institute of Contemporary Arts is proud to present a new edition by Cerith Wyn Evans and his first work ever produced in blue argon.
“equals….”(protracted (in argon)) has been produced by Wyn Evans longterm trusted neon-fabricator, Dusty Sprengenal, exclusively for the ICA. Wyn Evans has translated into neon the Unicode symbol ‘=‘ elongating it horizontally in a manner that suggests the alteration of its universal codification. Through this simple intervention, the definitive concept of equivalency is made unstable, and open.
This work could be compared to aspects of concrete poetry, where the spatial and visual qualities of a sign become as important, and meaningful, as what it signifies. The effect is similar to Wyn Evans’s neon text sculptures, where he uses favourite passages of text or the subtitles from films to create enigmatic signs that impose a retinal and mental after-image in the viewer’s mind.
Cerith Wyn Evans lives and works in London. He has had major solo exhibitions including the Tate Britain Commission, London and Haus Konstruktiv, Zurich (both 2017); Museion Bolzano, Italy (2015); Serpentine Sackler Gallery, London (2014); TBA-21 Augarten, Vienna (2013); De La Warr Pavillion, East Sussex, UK (2012); Kunsthall Bergen, Norway (2011); Tramway, Glasgow (2009); Inverleith House, Edinburgh (2009); MUSAC, Leon, France (2008); Musée d’art moderne de la ville de Paris (2006) and Kunsthaus Graz (2005).
