He is among the internationally celebrated group of Young British Artists that studied at Goldsmiths, University of London in the late 1980s. Hume’s highly distinctive compositions are marked by an innovative use of colour, line and surface.

The edition presented here is based on the painting of the same name, which Hume produced as part of Mum, his 2017 solo show at Sprüth Magers, London. Taking the image of the lamb as the central point, the edition is a meditation on innocence and spirituality, placing these qualities in dialogue with the violence of human existence. The coalescence, intersection and interstices of these areas is reinforced further by the title Sunday, connotes the Christian day of rest, as well as the banal ways in which we utilise that day in domestic life, for instance with the Sunday roast.

Produced as a three-colour silkscreen by esteemed print fabricators Jealous, each edition has been hand-finished by Hume, who has spray-painted the marker on the lamb’s rump. Sunday is immediately recognisable as coming from Hume’s stable, through the stylised form of the lamb and the way in which its figure both emerges from and merges with the paper on which it is printed.

Gary Hume lives and works between London and New York. He represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1999 and the São Paulo Biennial in 1996, the same year he was nominated for the Turner Prize. In 2001, he was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts, London. The print takes the form of the cover of a novel, with the top section a complex graphic layering of letters and colours, counterbalanced by a clean band of neutral colour bearing the title and author/artist’s name, where drips of paint at the bottom of the canvas expose its layering of colours. The work is part of an ongoing series, where Miller employs mono or bi-syllabic words to create hard-edged letter paintings with bold, saturated colours that reference, amongst others, Robert Rauschenberg and Ed Ruscha’s use of vernacular signage and motifs. Miller depicts the letters in a range of typefaces, through a process of isolating, overlaying and reconnecting, to create a sense of depth in the image that deconstructs and abstracts the meaning of language itself. Inspired by illuminated manuscripts, these works bring a Pop sensibility to the lettering of medieval monks, connecting the sacred with the everyday.

The letter X is significant to the artist in its form and design but also given its connotations and connection to punk culture and X-rated cinema. The letters XXX are built up from layers of various colours, their image suggesting objects in motion, where several forms are compressed at once, kaleidoscopic and transparent – like a series of sequential, transparent slides.

This ICA Artists' Edition is in memory of Sir Herbert Reed (1893 - 1968), the Great Yorkshire poet, philosopher and co-founder of the ICA. As a writer, his novels and short stories often take his autobiography as the point of departure. A love of books themselves, not only as the carriers of stories but as objects in their own right, has inspired his artistic practice. In his paintings, works on paper and printmaking Miller regularly sets up the potential for narratives, characterised by their humanity and tragi-comedy, using titles, phrases or single letters and words to echo or allow for multiple readings. By weaving together raw materials such as clay and bronze, Viktor nods to the rich tradition of West African pottery-making and celebrates sacred diviners and relics that appear throughout her work in the form of vessels and sculptural objects. Taking off from her Constellations painting series, the gourd-shaped vessel is inlaid with golden symbols, runes, stars, and spirals, along with complex surface reliefs and beading. The interplay between golden symbols and beading synthesises the past and present of Viktor’s oeuvre and visual language, linking her exploration of symbology with the evolution of traditional forms. Inspired by a new series of sculptures that Viktor refers to as “Soul Vessels,” the bronze pedestal references and fuses together the geometric abstraction of modernist African architecture and traditional seating forms found across Ghana, Nigeria, and Tanzania.

Inaugurated in 1991, ICA Artists' Editions are special productions made for the Institute of Contemporary Arts by some of the most interesting artists working today. Her synthesis of painting, sculpture, performance, photography and water-gilding with 24-carat gold produces a charged materiality that at once addresses philosophical ideas of the finite and the infinite, the microcosm and macrocosm, evanescence and eternity. In her recent sculptures and paintings, the use of materials once embedded deep within the earth – gold, black marble and volcanic rock – establishes a timelessness both intimate and intangible.

Within Viktor’s cosmology, black as matter and as colour plays the lead role of materia prima or the primordial source of life, a provocation and a challenge to the sociopolitical and historical preconceptions surrounding ‘blackness’ and its universal implications.

The artist’s interest in architecture, the materiality of objects and how they inhabit space informs many of the installations she envisions and builds. With an archaeological aesthetic impulse, and influences spanning West African sculptural traditions, ancient Egyptian iconography, classical astronomy and European portraiture, Viktor’s practice traverses mortal and divine realms.

Lina Iris Viktor received her BA in film at Sarah Lawrence College and studied photography as continuing education at The School of Visual Arts, in New York.
