If I wanted to understand the cities and countries I visited, I had to start not with the good old things, but, as Brecht put it, the bad new ones. That was why I wanted to write about Mostar: I suspected I would find the same kind of people as I had in Ljubljana, Zagreb, Belgrade, Pristina and Skopje in the last decade: queer/feminist artist-activists, who were realistic about the flaws of Yugoslav society while lamenting its awful end, and wishing its socialist principles hadn’t been destroyed by nationalism to be replaced by shock doctrine neoliberalism.
MOSTAR is by Juliet Jacques published by the Tenderbooks Imprint. Taking form as a travelogue-diary, Juliet Jacques documents and reflects upon her recent visit to the city at the heart of Bosnia-Herzegovina’s history, engaging with its past and future through dialogue with its present.
