Doig explores the workings of memory. Filtering his own experience through eclectic source material and art-historical references, his dreamlike paintings visualise the sensation of looking back on the past. Doig amplifies this drama through virtuosic brushwork, suspending his art in the twilight zone between abstraction and figuration.
Maracas 2000 (2023) is created from a wash of blue and green, and is typical of Doig's compositions, which are often developed from film stills or other photographs, and which often feature isolated figures.
About the Artist
Peter Doig (b. 1959, Edinburgh, Scotland. Lives and works in Trinidad)
Peter Doig's paintings have a tendency to disorientate us, even when they depict recognisable imagery such as figures and buildings. He invites us to consider the status of the people, places and events that populate his pictures, whether they exist in private or public realms, in personal or shared experiences.
