Mathieu Malouf’s practice traverses painting and sculpture, creating psychedelic works that are laden with irony and sardonic wit. Merging references from popular culture with traditional sculptural and painting tropes, the artist’s work critically navigates Generation Y angst.
Taking the iconic ‘Kit Cat Klock’ for his base, Malouf has hand-altered the A-typically American product, giving the clock Marxist hammer and sickle eyes, as well as a bespoke box. His intervention with this classic piece of Americana Kitsch provokes a dialogue that critically navigates the ‘American Dream’, the country’s historical global relations and its current positioning.
