Not unlike, in type or function, the sign in Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times (1936) that reads ‘this is a moving stairway’, the sign on Eugène Atget’s studio door advertising ‘Documents for Artists’ (1890s), or the cover of Jörg Immendorf’s To Do What Must Be Done (1972) which lists the painter, the musician, the writer, and the filmmaker, Christopher Williams’ poster for the ICA, in attempt to avoid the inflationary rhetoric surrounding contemporary art, simply lists the materials and services that his studio provides: wall coverings, radio, printed matter, picture frames, photographs, films, arrangements.
