Childish has had a strong personal connection to the Pacific Northwest since the 1990s and it often appears in his work. His works poetically capture the peace and silence of the area, while the expressive brushstrokes reflect the majesty of the natural beauty found in the region. In alaskan packer (2022) a lone figure stands in a long boat, oar in hand, staring out at the viewer from an ethereal landscape. Whether the man pictured is a friend, stranger, spiritual guide, or the artist himself, it is ultimately left to the viewer to decide.
About the Artist
Billy Childish (b. 1959, Chatham, UK)
Billy Childish's paintings, woodcuts, poetry, writing and music share a common honesty that, rather than being nombrilistic, is deeply compelling and idiosyncratic. Childish's practice is informed by a tireless curiosity for themes as varied as war, the history and topography of his local and personal environment, social protest, hill walking and religious philosophy.
