Barbara Steveni (1928–2020), known as the founder of Artist Placement Group, was a British artist-activist whose collaborative, multidisciplinary and research based work has proved foundational in the evolution of ‘socially engaged’ practice. Her work has shaped discourse around what it means to be an artist and proposed radically new contexts for cultural production including government, education and industry. This book is the first dedicated to her life and work, published by Modern Art Oxford on the occasion of her retrospective I Find Myself, 1 March - 8 June 2025.
