The things we do for love (so proud so alone) is part of a larger narrative present in Parker's work, in which Parker Ito is portrayed as Joan of Arc – a concept which first emerged when Parker attempted to produce stylistic copies of Rudolf Stingel paintings.

Ito was particularly attracted to an image of a sculpture of Joan of Arc, which then became the subject matter. Halfway through the production of the paintings, he started placing himself in the works as Joan of Arc. The print refers to the moment after Ito's White Cube show, where the artist is exhausted and experiences a postpartum-like depression. The objects featured in the work refer directly to this show.
